For those who also follow AroundOakPark.com, you may recall that we featured Lynn Palmgren as a ‘neighbor to know’ a few months back. She, along with her business partner (and now husband) Nick Arestopoulos, are the owners of Palmgren Acupuncture in downtown Oak Park. I recently had coffee with Lynn and she mentioned their desire to expand their business to Berwyn. I thought talking to Nick would be a great opportunity to both learn more about the other half of the business as well as the impending expansion!

Berwynites, please read on to learn more about your soon-to-be neighbor Nick!

Around Berwyn
Right now you have a thriving office in Oak Park. Tell us more about your desire to expand.

Nick Arestopoulos
The biggest thing bringing us to this area (Berwyn) is the location of our practice. We work in downtown Oak Park. Many of our clients live in Berwyn and from their recommendations we started to explore Berwyn, what a gem! I really love the variety of homes, restaurants, and businesses. If you can’t find it in Berwyn, you probably can’t find it. Now we are looking at options to open an office in Berwyn in the next year. We are currently driving around Berwyn and have seen some potential office spaces on Cermak.

AB
What does the perfect day in Berwyn look like to you?

Nick
The perfect day would be a Sunday. Breakfast at Autre Monde Cafe followed by a long walk through the neighborhood. Enjoy a late lunch at Bodhi Thai, get some ice cream at La Michoacana, and listen to some live music at Fitzgerald’s in the evening.

AB
If you had to explain the ‘value proposition’ of Palmgren Acupuncture to someone in two minutes, what would you say?

Nick
The value proposition is to avoid future health problems and rectify current problems. The aim is to correct the situation with as little intervention as possible in a safe and effective way.

AB
And, what question do you get most often from people stopping by/calling into the office?

Nick
“Do you take insurance?”
And the answer is, it depends. Every insurance policy is different, even if they are from the same company. We are a “pay at the time of service” provider. We give superbills which the client submits to their insurance and it is then reimbursed directly from their company.

AB
What is the biggest lesson you have learned (so far) in running a business?

Nick
The biggest lesson is that everybody has the same amount of time and it’s only a question of what you are going to focus on doing. There isn’t enough time for everything and there have to be priorities. Also, the answer to not having enough time is hiring people to help.

AB
And what has been the most difficult part?

Nick
Learning Quickbooks.

AB
Can you name your greatest success (or something you’re most proud of) in your work?

Nick
My greatest success would be when clients are doing well and seeing results. We have been here for three years and our practice continues to grow. I am very proud of the work we do and the help we provide.

AB
As a small business owner, how do you stay organized?

Nick
I only check e-mail three times per day. Once at 10 a.m. after I have been working for two hours, at 1 p.m., and at 5 p.m. It has opened up my day to do other things like network, continuing education, and business seminars.

AB
What did you want to be when you were a kid?

Nick
When I was a kid I wanted to be a ninja.

AB
What is your favorite season?

Nick
My favorite season is late fall after the first frost but then the temperature becomes mild again. I love the changing of the colors and the crisp feeling in the air before everything goes into a deep freeze for the winter.

AB
Finally, what are three words that describe you?

Nick
Creative, eccentric, caring.
