The City of Berwyn will have a vigil to honor the victims of the Orlando, Fla. shooting on Friday, June 17, from 8 to 9 p.m. at Serenity Park, 6647 W. 26th Street.

The Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) will organize the event. They are encouraging the entire community to come out and support following the worst mass shooting in the history of the United States.

“The Berwyn LGBTQ community, along with family and friends, are welcome to attend the vigil in honor of our slain Orlando brothers and sisters,” is written on The invitation continues, “Show solidarity with those in mourning during this time of great sadness.”

Berwyn has always been regarded as forward-thinking when it comes to LGBTQ causes and rights. For example, Berwyn South School District 100 was the first of its kind in the state of Illinois to pass a comprehensive administration policy in support of transgender students.

After one Facebook user asked why there haven’t been similar events for other U.S. tragedies such as Boston and Fort Hood, the Why Berwyn account further clarified the reasoning behind hosting the vigil. The statement reads:

“This is a community-driven event that touched the heart of Alderman Marge Paul and many of our residents. This event isn’t meant to take anything away from other tragedies but to give space for reflection and mourning of this one.”
