In early May, the Berwyn Development Corporation, or BDC, introduced a competition to find the best local specialty burger.
The contest consisted of twelve different restaurants such as Big Guys Sausage Stand, Bubba & Bobby’s Beef, Culver’s, Paisans Pizzeria & Bar, Cigars and Stripes BBQ Lounge, and more.
The contest included two separate rounds of judging. In round one, the public could vote for their favorite burgers and narrow the field down to five restaurants. Round two specifically judged the top five restaurants on their specialty burgers and judges were locals from the area. Judges included Ruth Volbre of the City of Berwyn, Joe Chomiczewski of the Wednesday Journal, Sandra Dita Lopez of Baird & Warner, Anthony Griffin of the Berwyn Development Corporation, Patti McGuinness of Chicagoland Moves, and Jerry Hernandez of Lavergne’s Tavern. The combination of the scores from the public’s votes and the votes of the local judges would award one burger as “Berwyn’s Best.”
After careful deliberation and side by side taste tests, the Backyard Burger from the Cigars and Stripes BBQ Lounge was awarded the honor of “Berwyn’s Best.”
The Backyard Burger is an 8 oz. flame-cooked patty on a toasted brioche bun made with a touch of their own home-smoked, burnt rib tip ends and topped with iceberg lettuce, tomato, red onion and sweet n’ hot pickles. You can also add bleu, white cheddar or habanero and ghost cheese.
As one judge commented, “It tastes like summer. I really enjoyed the “build–your-own” options.”
Cigar and Stripes owner, Ronnie Lottz, also reacted to the award, “There are only five items on our menu, and they are all equally good. The burger fits right in and is well deserving. The competition was stiff, that’s for sure. All five burgers are truly great burgers in Berwyn.”
Cigar and Stripes BBQ Lounge is located at 6715 W Ogden Ave in Berwyn. To learn more about their menu, visit their website, www.stripesbbq.com.
