Autre Monde Café uses $45,000 loan for renovations

The Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) has lent Autre Monde Café & Spirits a $45,000 loan to use towards renovations. The loan was approved by the Berwyn City Council on March 8.

New renovations of the Mediterranean-style café will take place from April 4 to 7, according to co-owner Christine Tully Aranza. With the fifth anniversary of the restaurant nearing, Aranza figured it would be a good time to begin the renovations.

The dining room will have new, more comfortable chairs, refinished floors, new light fixtures and soundproofing installment. “We’re happy in our little Berwyn home, we want to give people something else,” said Aranza. “We thought we’d make it a little more friendly.”

Previous renovations of Aure Monde Café included the expansion of the patio with more seating and an outside bar. Room was also made by giving the Berwyn Park District a greenhouse that had been used to grow fresh herbs and vegetables for the restaurant.

The restaurant originally took out a $225,000 loan to purchase the property in 2010, according to BDC project manager Mark McGuire Jr. The loans lent to the café come from seven commercial banks from which it gets a line of credit. The borrowed money is then lent to a business at a seven percent interest rate, said McGuire.
