Starbucks, the largest roaster and retailer of specialty coffee in the world, breaks ground Oct. 1 as the first tenant in the second phase of the Berwyn Gateway Plaza development.
Mayor Robert J. Lovero is optimistic about the grand opening as he stated, “Our residents have been rallying for a Starbucks for many years. I’m so pleased to have finally brought Starbucks to the finish line in Berwyn, and I know that it will be successful on our high impact Cermak Road corridor.”
District Manager for Starbucks Coffee Company, Christine Karasek, also seemed motivated about Starbucks new arrival as she stated, “We are very excited to bring the Starbucks experience to Berwyn and we look forward to becoming a part of this wonderful community.”
The first phase of the Berwyn Gateway Plaza development began in 2012, when Berwyn Gateway Partners, a team comprised of Keystone Venture, J&P Properties, Bern Realty and Hague Architecture, entered into Redevelopment Agreement (RDA) on the site located at the northeast corner of Cermak Road and Harlem Avenue in Berwyn. This project welcomed six new national tenants.
Berwyn Gateway Plaza’s second development plans on welcoming seven more additional tenants along with Starbucks. The 18,000+ square foot site will also house a Noodles & Company, Betty’s Bistro and Fifth Third Bank. Phase two is scheduled to be complete by Summer 2016. The project is financed, in part, with Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds.
Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) Executive Director Anthony Griffin said, “Through our public-private partnership with the City of Berwyn, the BDC is equipped to help high-quality tenants like Starbucks take advantage of our urban infill opportunities, which typically are saddled with barriers to entry. We are looking forward to the completion of the second phase of redevelopment which will welcome seven additional retailers.”
