Buchmeier sues city of Berwyn and city spokesperson for defamation

Loren Buchmeier, former Berwyn police officer, is suing for defamation, alleging an article included quotes that were published intentionally to hurt his reputation. Buchmeier filed the suit Wednesday, Sept. 2 in Cook County Circuit Court against his employer, the city of Berwyn, the city’s spokesman David Ormsby and his firm, David Ormsby Public Relations Illinois, the Chicago Sun-Times, Sun-Times Media, and its parent company, Wrapports, and LiveLeak.com.

According to the Cook County Record, in 2014 Buchmeier filed a civil rights lawsuit against the city of Berwyn, its police department and officials.  A day after that 2014 lawsuit was filed, an article was published in the Chicago Sun-Times reporting on the incident. In this article, Berwyn City Spokesman David Ormsby was quoted as saying the lawsuit was a “shakedown” of taxpayers. This article also appeared on the website LiveLeak.com.

Buchmeier alleges these were false statements published about him in the newspaper article.

Buchmeier seeks damages of more than $50,000 and litigation costs. He is represented by attorneys Joseph L. Ponsetto and Peter M. DeLongis of the Law Offices of Peter M. Delongis in Oak Brook Terrace. The trial is set for Nov. 11, 2015.
